Did you know?

  • That there are many subgenres of reggae. Some of these subgenres are:
  1. Skinhead reggae- this originated in the late 1960s. This subgenre has a slightly faster beat than that of rock steady. Two of the artiste that sang skinhead reggae are The Maytals and John Holt.
  2. Roots reggae- this type of reggae involves lyrics of praises to Jah (the Rastafarian God) it comprises of what is considered to be “spiritual” lyrics. Other lyrical themes that falls under this subgenre of reggae includes lyrics of resistance to government oppression and poverty, one artiste that sang songs like these were Bob Marley.
  3. Dud- this subgenre involved an extensive remixing of recorded material.
  4. Lover’s rock- this subgenre originated in the mid-1970s in south London. As the name itself states it was basically about love.
  5. Dancehall- this genre was developed in the 1980s. Its style was a disc jockey singing and rapping over raw and fast rhythms.
  6. Reggaeton- this is a combination of reggae and dancehall.

  • Jazz- this is not originally Jamaican but it was popular in the 20s and onward. Jazz gave rise to Ska, since this style borrowed tremendously from Jazz.
  • Mento- is considered to be the great great grandmother of reggae. This style of music gave way to the birth of reggae. It can be noted that reggae is an evolving form of this style. This style however, is not really know outside of Jamaica.
